WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE CLASS:
Billet Material Included: 200 layers of pre-washed 1075 / 15n20 / Nickel
Each person will have a stack of materials that you will layer, canister, forge weld using 3B Nazel Hammer, then a mix of forging and hot rolling before using a patterning dye on the Hydraulic Press for final layer manipulation of your Damascus billet. You will experience the start to finish forging process that each and every billet made here at Vegas Forge goes through. An experienced Vegas Forge employee will be there each step of the way to demonstrate how to safely use each of the machines needed during the Damascus forging process. Machines that will be used during the class:
The Forge – Forges will be heated to 1950 degrees during the forging process
3B Nazel Hammer – The most exciting part of the class for most, using the 3B power hammer to set the welds and work the material down, using 300lbs per square inch with each hit of the hammer.
Rolling Mill: The rolling mill will be used during the forging process, hot rolling the material helps keep the pattern consistent while drawing down the material.
14′ Tall Hydraulic Press: If needed for your desired pattern, dyes can be used to pattern your billet using this 300-ton hydraulic press, with this beast of a press and the large set of dyes this process should be able to be done in a single heat.
Coal Iron Works Hydraulic Press: This awesome machine is also available to use at any point forging the forging process for anyone that is not comfortable with using the 3B power hammer
After finishing the forging process, we will anneal the billet overnight, and then use one of the 30″ Blanchard surface grinder to remove all the leftover scale from the forging process, lightly etch your billet to expose the awesome pattern you created during the forging process. We will ship your billet to you within a week of your class date. ( if you would like to take your billet after the class, anneal and grind it at your home shop you are welcome to do so. )
